Fungi prevalent this month, Armillaria?
Some really fine Autumn colours are developing this year, the only real disappointment being the Acer shirasawanum 'Areum' whose leaves just crinkled and dropped. The yellows of the Acer cappadocicum 'Aureum' and the reliable reds of Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' have been spectacular. Corylopsis pauciflora has excelled itself this year with its vibrant yellow buttery colours - wonderful.

"Water-woobling blue-sky-puddled October.
The distance microscopic, the ditches brilliant.
Flowers so low-powered and fractional.
They are not in any book."

Ted Hughes - Autumn Nature Notes.
