General April view of My Garden
April has been a month of contrasts, very variable weather - storms and low temperatures which badly affected the daffodils, although there were no losses noticed. Last week there was a lot of snow on the mountain tops, two weeks previous we had sleet and freezing temperatures at night. There have only been a few days of mild weather. Now (the 27th of April) it has been mild and sunny (16°C) but the northerly winds have set in again. The temperatures are now around 13°C and cloudy. The springs on the side have a much reduced flow as we have had no real prolonged periods of rain and the new growth of plants and especially trees will increase and exacerbate this reduction. A lot has been tidied up in the garden and even with the variable weather the garden is almost at its best.
Ceanothus arboreus 'Trewithen Blue' is laden with flowers, bees in the evening work the flowers vigorously. Acers are throwing their leaves and most are now flowering. The Grevillea rosmarinifolia continues to flower. Many of the ferns have their new fronds unfurling. Matteuccia asiatica's new fronds are stunning. Erythroniums are at their best. Most of the Hostas are now with new leaves. Bumble bees (at least 3 species) are abundant, honey bees are everywhere, some of the early butterflies are evident, birds are singing everywhere (including a chiffchaff).
